Throughout the fantastic abundance of exclusive one off pieces, R. U. Precious uses a range of techniques and effects to maintain a distinct style.

Consistency in style often comes from an artist without effort. To constantly create fresh work, a selection of techniques and effects is a must!

Here is an outline of the main ones used within R U Precious.

Appliqué

The trademark style for R U Precious is predominately created with the use of appliqué. R U Precious appliqué pieces are individually embellished fabric paintings.

Each one-off fabric painting is designed in a raw, free form fashion.

Fabric on fabric, appliqué is shapes and designs, cut and pinned on, then sewn down with the appropriate stitch.

Ratna either uses the edge as a salvage, turned under, or raw cut. Where it is raw cut, a tight zigzag stitch is used to hold the fray and create the desired effect.

Patching Denim

Whether for a dress, or a pair of jeans, Ratna loves to work the never ending array of options with denim.

In patching pieces together, striking effects are generated.

By accentuating the seams/hems and using a considered combination of shapes, frayed edges and different denim shades, the aesthetic is heaven for denim lovers.

Special Fabric Combinations

Special fabric combinations are probably the strongest underlying effect and talent in R U Precious garments.

By unique, striking or subtle, combinations of colour and texture, Ratna’s generates beauty from passion. A cross over between fashion design and textile art.

Draping

It’s most likely, that most of you, with your love for clothing, at some stage have held a length of fabric up against your body and pulled it into shape to imagine a possible garment.

This is the basic idea behind draping. It is where a garment pattern is designed on a form.

Fabric is draped and pinned into the desired shape using darts, cuts and tucks etc. Pieces can be spontaneously added with a raw creative flair.

Ratna loves to generate one off dresses etc using the freedom of this technique. Great fun generates fantastic results.
